John Teague – Conductor - Oswestry Sinfonia: from September 2006
John Teague’s appointment as Conductor, only the third in the orchestra’s 27-year history, took effect in September 2006, and – judging by the many congratulatory comments – he achieved remarkable results at his first concert held on November 25th, 2006.
John’s background is steeped in music performance. He has been a professional player (trombone) with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Scottish Opera and the Royal Ballet Orchestra, and been a freelance player for the Hallé, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Scottish National Orchestras. He has even played with Oswestry Sinfonia on several occasions in the past!
A conductor and musical director for over 15 years, eleven of them have involved adult education and conducting orchestras and wind bands. He is currently holds the post of Musical Director for the RAF Cosford Area Band.
On Oswestry Sinfonia, John says that he’s well aware of its enviable track record and believes it has real potential to develop in the future. In writing about his vision for the orchestra, he said:
“I am firmly committed to the notion of the Sinfonia being a Romantic symphony orchestra at heart, with the flexibility to ‘scale down’ in both numbers and approach to other styles and periods when the programme demands.”
Huw Lloyd, has been Leader of Oswestry Sinfonia since it’s inception in 1979, with only a brief absence in the 1980’s when he joined his children in the Parish Church Choir.
After moving from London to take up the Head of Music post at Adams School, Wem in 1975, he joined the Shropshire Music Service in 1985.
He is currently the Manager of the Music Service in North Shropshire and the Director of the Shropshire School of Music.
